Cadets Going On SJAB Guangdong HK Trip

Dear cadets going for the Guangdong HK overseas trip,

We are one week away from the trip. As we approach that fantastic day, here are some updates you need to know:

1.     The weather in Guangdong and Hongkong have been mostly periodic showers.
a.     Hongkong’s estimated weather will be between 17 degrees to 27 degrees. It is cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon.
b.     Zhuhai is between 21 to 25 degrees
c.     Foshan is between 21 to 29 degrees
d.     Guangzhou is between 17 to 20 degrees
Thus the colder areas are Guangzhou and Hongkong. Please ensure you have a suitable jacket or sweater based on this weather in your handcarry bag. Do make sure you bring an umbrella in case of rain.

2.     In view of this wet weather, you are advised to take a flu jab if you want to increase your immune system. However, there has been many cases of people falling sick after taking the jab due to body resistance. If you do want to take the jab, please consult the doctor or parents to make an informed decision.  Nevertheless, please note that prevention is better than cure. Please wear a jacket at all times, follow instructions and drink plenty of water every night when you are in the hotel. Then you should not fall sick.

3.     There is a change in the SJAB school we are visiting as the current school is busy with speech day preparations. In view of this, we are visiting another secondary school known as Sun Hoi Directors’ College (東華三院辛亥年總理中學). It is actually the National SJAB Footdrill champion in Hongkong. There is a chance we need to perform. Maybe I suggest you can modify some camp performance for it. They have a website you can visit at http://shd.school.hk/system/tool/newsletter/index.php?netroom_id=1&channel=&tool_id=14653&tool_admin=0&popup=1. There have quite a few videos in youtube too.

4.     You need to prepare 3-4 small inexpensive gifts for the students in the Hongkong school. It is the sincerity and packaging that is more important than the price. Suggested gifts that are uniquely Singapore is like the Anderson exercise book or foolscap pad. You can wrap with a gift wrapper and it looks good. Other possibilities are like Singapore logo key chains or souvenirs. As we are representing Singapore SJAB HQ, I will also be passing 2-3 SJAB logo keychains you can give them together with your personal gifts. I will also pass you SJAB HQ newsletter. However, in the event you did not use the gifts, you need to return me back. Cause it has to be returned back to HQ.

5.     We have collected quite a few items in the last few weeks. I will meet all of you after the SJAB camp on Thursday to pass you the items (books, toys, stationary) that you need to put in your luggage. This is so that each luggage will not exceed 20kg. We will consolidate them in China.

6.     Please make sure you bring along a pair of jeans. Cause we need to standardize attire for the SJAB HQ visit.

7.     All service-learning projects have to be checked by either Mrs Kumar or myself before Monday 26 November.

8.     The Foshan primary school has been changed to Foshan Rainbow Special Education Training Centre. This was a change just 2 days ago as the earlier is not available. For the special education centre, the students are 5 to 7 years old, may have physical disabilities or autism. For this group, please prepare simple games to play with them. Please bring along sweets as well.

9.     For the Zhuhai primary school, it is confirmed. Your teaching aids and materials will all be used there. We will donate English books for their library. Please also prepare some sweets for both schools.

10.  I have attached some documents. Please check your email. They will give you more ideas on the places we are visiting and the admin details I have informed you earlier.

11. Please familiarise yourself with Anderson SJAB's history. The students might ask you. You can find our history in the blog tab above.

Thank you. Please don’t fall sick or get injured this week. So that you can have a meaningful time there. Remember the things we emphasize for the packing list especially personal medication and no expensive gadgets (PSP, smartphones, iPads) . If there is anything you are not sure, please ask us.

OVERDUE FORMS

Dear cadets,
It has been 2 weeks and I still have yet to received all your November Camp forms. You already did not hand up on time, yet you do not have the initiative to come and find me to hand up your forms?
The following cadets, I expect you to hand up your forms tomorrow, before school begins, before flag raising, :
1) Sun Ren Yong
2) Yeo Su Bin
3) Justin
4) Zahidah
5) Catherine
6) Wani
7) Emmanuel
8) Clark
9) Elvin
Many of you give me the excuse that you do not have the forms. If that is the case, it just goes to show that your platoon mates did not collect for you, even though we clearly asked them to collect for absentees. This will just add on to the large amount of punishment you owe me already, if the fact that you didn't receive the form is true.

SJAB HK-Guangdong Overseas Trip Briefing Postponed

Dear students going on the SJAB overseas trip in November,

Please note that the briefing this week has been postponed to Term 4 Week 1 Friday (14 September). Reason for the change is because we needed to confirm the schools and orphanages we are visiting for CIP in China and Hongkong before briefing you on what you need to do for the service learning. Moreover, I will be flying to Guangzhou for a few days transit at Hongkong this September holidays, to get a feel of Guangzhou and explore some urban sites.

In the meantime, I will be emailing you some files in the next 2 weeks to double check your details like passport number and name is correct. Cause it will be the same name as one reflected in the plane ticket so cannot have error.

Thanks

I will be coming to pass you the following forms on Monday:
  1. Official Consent Form for parent
  2. Edusave Form (In the event you need to withdraw money from Edusave, there is no maximum sum as long as you have at least $100 left in the account). Otherwise you cannot use Edusave. The other criteria is that Edusave withdrawals must be whole numbers, i.e. if have $167.50 in Edusave, you can only draw max $$60 ($100 left in account plus round up in whole number).
  3. The amount you need to pay. As we got CAA Gold, all Singapore citizens will get $200 off the price of the trip, i.e. you pay $1325. But please do not go around telling people.
  4. Subsidy form for Singapore applicants whose family gross income is $4500 and below.
  5. For Sec 2 and 3 Singapore citizens who need additional financial support, it is possible to apply another additional 10% subsidy, subjected to limited vacancies. However, there are a few conditions: 1) Your family gross income must be $2501 and above; Below $2501 cannot apply as the school already subsidize 80%. 2) You need to write a short paragraph in a Form D will pass you to justify why you deserve the subsidy and what you can do to contribute next year. The 10% additional subsidy can only be approved by Mr Lo. Some of the achievements you can write are NCOC, BGI and First Aid competition. The thing you need to commit to is NCOC ALTC 2013. If you are interested in the subsidy, you can inform me on Monday when I pass you the forms.
  6. Information on VISA applicant for non Singaporeans. There might be an additional charge of $85 for some nationalities.
You will need to submit the following things if possible to me on Monday 13 August (if possible):
  1. Completed consent forms (remember to cancel the term "disallow").
  2. Completed Edusave and Subsidy forms
  3. Full cheque payment. The Cheque should be a crossed cheque addressed to "Anderson Secondary School." Please do not pay in cash as it is dangerous to bring hundreds and thousands of dollars to school. You can inform me or Mrs Kumar if you have problems with the full payment.
  4. Passport Photocopy (must have 6 months validity date)
I will pass you the updated itineracy once it is ready. The reason for the delay is because the schools need confirmation. We are also trying to add a factory visit. Tentatively, the Hongkong SJAB school we are visiting is http://ww3.cbt.edu.hk/hp/v1/index.html.

Thanks. The official trip briefing will be on Week 9 Friday 24 August 12.45pm. We will confirm the details once the date gets nearer.

SJAB Guangdong Hongkong Overseas Trip FAQ

Dear all,

I receive quite a few questions on the trip so I thought maybe I can answer them in the blog as they are good questions:

Q1: Is the trip dangerous?

Answer 1: All the sites are tourist sites. In fact some of them like the Opium War museum has a certified 5 star rating by the government in China. We chose China for CIP compared to the other Asian states as it is politically stable. Our travel agent is also a famous accredited travel company in Singapore. The places we are trekking at safe too. They are like the tourist routes in Seven Star Crags and the stairs in Tian Tan Buddha. However, as similar to all overseas trips like the sec 2 Sabbatical, it is very important to follow instructions like time to meet, time to lights out for safety reasons. These precautions are similar to what we do in school trips too. That is the reason why we specify that cadets who join must follow instructions, not carry serious breathing problems or injuries, and not be fussy over food. Following instructions also includes not being late every morning or every site we visit. Cause it will delay the whole trip and make us look bad in front other CCA. We cannot be reminding you everyday to bathe, change your clothes or have enough sleep. We also cannot have students fussy over food cause it is not right to waste food. The needy village school students have not enough food. Food in China tends to be more oily and salty as both are symbols of wealth.

Q2: How physical is the trip itself?

Answer 2: It is definitely less physical than NCOC and our physical trainings. However, there is quite a bit of walking over medium to long distances at leisure pace. CIP schools are usually located inside the village and not on the main road. Moreover, we need some walking to explore some places like Victoria Peak and some tourist sites. It should not be an issue if you have been taking part in GM physical activities or have survived NCOC. However, we do not advise students with serious asthma, breathing difficulties or injuries to join. Reason is because we want our students to have complete experiences overseas. It will be a waste if you are constantly in the bus. Moreover, the medical facilities in countryside is not as good so immediate treatment may be a issue if there is a sudden attack.

Q3: Is it a fun trip?

Answer 3: It is a trip that prepares you to be a leader. Service Learning is important in Poly and JC. It is a soft skill that we want to pass down to you. This trip took around 2 years to plan. The reason it took so long was we wanted to make sure all the activities and sites prepared are unique and customised to the SJAB motto of "the Service of Mankind," that translates itself as preparing our cadets for the medical sector and service to the community. That is why most of the activities are leaned towards physical or soft skills based. Our concept is similar to the "Doctors without Borders" concept, where we believe we can make a difference to the needy not just in Singapore but in Asia. Shopping is not something we look into cause we have limited time. Shopping is something you can do when you go on family vacations or personal trips when you grow up. It does not prepare you to be a leader. We leave it to the word of mouth of cadets who have travelled with us before whether the unique SJAB experience is fun. They are the best ambassadors. For those who believe in what we do and our motto, please sign up for the trip if your parents are ok. Cause from past experiences, you will benefit a lot. Can ask those past, present CSMs and corps officer who have joined us.

Q4: What is the weather in Guangzhou and Hongkong in late November? Do I need winter clothes?

Answer 4: The weather in Hongkong is around 20-25 degrees in day time and can drop to 11- 15 degrees nightime. No winter clothes is needed. You can look at Hongkong serial shows actors and actresses to see what they wear. Guangzhou is same temperature but slightly colder in more rural areas. No need winter clothes.

Q5: How different is the CIP from Sec 2 Sabbatical?

Answer 5: It is a smaller group per activity or class. In Sec 2 Sabbatical, 40 students are involved in one activity. Ours will be in groups of around 8. It is much smaller but the learning experiences are far richer. We also provide more individual mentoring.

Q6: How much do I need to pay for the trip?

Answer 6: For PRs and foreigners, you need to pay $1525, excluding VISA charges for some nationalities. For Singapore citizens, there is a error in my briefing on Friday. The amount you pay should be the following, subject to minor changes depending on number of students going. Cause we have a small sum of incentive money due to CAA Gold. Currently we cap the additional money per Singapore citizen at $200. The reason why only Spore citizens get this sum of money is cause this is from the MOE Internationalisation and Opportunity Fund for Singapore citizens only. This amount will be more if there are fewer cadets going cause it is a lump sum divided by number of cadets:

Parents gross income below $2500: Students pay 20% ($265: limited cadets can qualify due to cap for number of students per trip that can claim this top tier subsidy)
Parents gross income $2501 to $3500: Students pay 50% ($662)
Parents gross income $3501 to $$4500: Students pay 75% ($993)
Parents gross income $4501 and above: Students pay 100% ($1325)

You can pass me the forms on Wednesday in GM if you are interested and your parents are ok. There are only 25 vacancies. Sec 2s and Sec 3s will get top priority as I recognize your sacrifices this year in NCOC, BGI and FA competition. Moreover you don't have many chances left to travel. Sec 1s please apply too if your parents are ok as we usually have vacancies left for Sec 1s in the last 4 years. If there is a need for interview, the criteria is based on attendance in CCA, participation in CCA, achievements in CCA and other factors like academic performance and leadership potential.

Thanks.
Mr Yong

Apologies for the late post.
To facilitate tomorrow's collection of money, I want the i/c to wirte down neatly who paid how much and whether it is the correct amount of money, at the bottom of list, also, write down total amount of money collected and names of those who did not hand up the money. Please be punctual for your first First Aid Kit duty.
Sec2s are to guide Sec1s thru the procedure of the FAK duty.
Bring only your valuables along, to be handed over to the NCOs.

Thanks
Nicholas
