SJAB Overseas Trip Penang Q&A

Dear cadets,

I receive many good questions and responses from the overseas trip, so I thought I can try answer them on the post so that everyone can have the answers:

1.
Q: How much deposit do I need to pay tomorrow?
A: Its $160 (20% of $800) for family income below or equal $3500, and $240 (30% of $800) for family income above $3500.

2.
Q: Can I pay in cash for the deposit?
A: Yes, you can pay in cheque, addressed to Anderson Secondary School, or cash. If you are passing me cash, I will prefer you pass me the documents and cash before flag raising as its safer. I am in office level 1 every morning 7.05 to 7.30am.

3.
Q: Can I pay in edusave for deposit?
A: No, the deposit is in cash or cheque. The cash or cheque with consent form is a form of commitment for the trip.  Cause we can use the names to confirm the exact price of the trip, as 30 or 40 pax trip will cost different due to economies of scale. Hence, this deposit will not be banked in until confirmation of final flight details. Upon our confirmation of the final price, you can pay in edusave for the full amount. We will then refund you back the cheque or cash depoosit.

4.
Q: I need more time to prepare the documents. Can I have an extension?
A: The urgent forms are the Form K consent and deposit money. They must reach me tomorrow (28 July) either before flag raising or just before GM first parade. Reason is cause I have to confirm the students tomorrow afternoon with the other UG teachers. We also have to confirm the airfare soon as  the Silkair plane to Penang is a small A320, with limited economy seats. Photocopy passport and OF form can come next week if you need more time. Passport can also come later if your passport is expiring.

5.
Q: My family income is above $5500. Why do I need to submit the OF form with income slip attached?
A: The reason is cause Singapore citizens above $5500 are paying less than $400 for the trip. The remaining sum comes from this account of OF so documentation is needed to be eligible for the trip. Otherwise have to pay $800, as the $400 OF subsidy is then not given.

6.
Q: Can we extend the 28 July deadline (tomorrow) for the deposit and consent form K?
A: No

7.
Q: Is the VIA portion physical in nature?
A: Yes, it is physical labour in the form of cleaning or patching things. But they are 100% safe task if you are not allergic to dust.

8.
Q: Is the submission of money a confirmation?
A: No, it is not. We will confirm the students on Friday afternoon. It is also subjected to demand by other UGs and the vacancies we have (13 pax).

Thank you

SJAB Penang Overseas Trip Submission of Forms and Deposit

Dear SJAB cadets and NCOs applying for the overseas trip to Penang,

Please note that you have to submit the following documents before Friday 28 July:

1. Consent Form K signed by parent
2. Photocopy of passport (with at least 6 months expiry)
3. OF Form with income slip of parents attached
4. Deposit of $160 (for family income below or equal $3500), or $240 (for family income above $3500). The preferred mode of payment is cheque addressed to Anderson Secondary School. But cash can be accepted too.

Please note that the final cost of the trip may go slightly up or down depending on the airline charges for the flight and the finalised programme.

For submission, you can pass me directly in School Level 1 General Office from 7.05am to 7.30am. Please do not ask someone to pass the form or money on your behalf as there were incidents in the past where the friend forget to pass and we could not take the student after the deadline.

Please also note that the submission does not imply you have been selected. Cause we can only take a certain number of applicants so there will be a selection process if the demand is above 13-14. Selection will then be based on contributions and whether you have traveled on an SJAB overseas trip before. In the event we have to make a selection, we will also return you back the money and forms if you fall short during the selection.

Please also take note that applicants must be able to take a bit of hardship for this trip, as its a VIA and learning trip, not exactly a sightseeing trip. The hardship is in terms of ambiance and quality of food,  physical element involved in hiking, the labour chores for VIA in orphanage, and lodging in safe 3 star hotel. The main focus of the trip is on leadership training and enriching others.

If you do encounter any issues, you can approach me.

The deadline for submission is 28 July 3pm.
Thank you
Mr Yong
