Cadets Going On SJAB Guangdong HK Trip

Dear cadets going for the Guangdong HK overseas trip,

We are one week away from the trip. As we approach that fantastic day, here are some updates you need to know:

1.     The weather in Guangdong and Hongkong have been mostly periodic showers.
a.     Hongkong’s estimated weather will be between 17 degrees to 27 degrees. It is cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon.
b.     Zhuhai is between 21 to 25 degrees
c.     Foshan is between 21 to 29 degrees
d.     Guangzhou is between 17 to 20 degrees
Thus the colder areas are Guangzhou and Hongkong. Please ensure you have a suitable jacket or sweater based on this weather in your handcarry bag. Do make sure you bring an umbrella in case of rain.

2.     In view of this wet weather, you are advised to take a flu jab if you want to increase your immune system. However, there has been many cases of people falling sick after taking the jab due to body resistance. If you do want to take the jab, please consult the doctor or parents to make an informed decision.  Nevertheless, please note that prevention is better than cure. Please wear a jacket at all times, follow instructions and drink plenty of water every night when you are in the hotel. Then you should not fall sick.

3.     There is a change in the SJAB school we are visiting as the current school is busy with speech day preparations. In view of this, we are visiting another secondary school known as Sun Hoi Directors’ College (東華三院辛亥年總理中學). It is actually the National SJAB Footdrill champion in Hongkong. There is a chance we need to perform. Maybe I suggest you can modify some camp performance for it. They have a website you can visit at http://shd.school.hk/system/tool/newsletter/index.php?netroom_id=1&channel=&tool_id=14653&tool_admin=0&popup=1. There have quite a few videos in youtube too.

4.     You need to prepare 3-4 small inexpensive gifts for the students in the Hongkong school. It is the sincerity and packaging that is more important than the price. Suggested gifts that are uniquely Singapore is like the Anderson exercise book or foolscap pad. You can wrap with a gift wrapper and it looks good. Other possibilities are like Singapore logo key chains or souvenirs. As we are representing Singapore SJAB HQ, I will also be passing 2-3 SJAB logo keychains you can give them together with your personal gifts. I will also pass you SJAB HQ newsletter. However, in the event you did not use the gifts, you need to return me back. Cause it has to be returned back to HQ.

5.     We have collected quite a few items in the last few weeks. I will meet all of you after the SJAB camp on Thursday to pass you the items (books, toys, stationary) that you need to put in your luggage. This is so that each luggage will not exceed 20kg. We will consolidate them in China.

6.     Please make sure you bring along a pair of jeans. Cause we need to standardize attire for the SJAB HQ visit.

7.     All service-learning projects have to be checked by either Mrs Kumar or myself before Monday 26 November.

8.     The Foshan primary school has been changed to Foshan Rainbow Special Education Training Centre. This was a change just 2 days ago as the earlier is not available. For the special education centre, the students are 5 to 7 years old, may have physical disabilities or autism. For this group, please prepare simple games to play with them. Please bring along sweets as well.

9.     For the Zhuhai primary school, it is confirmed. Your teaching aids and materials will all be used there. We will donate English books for their library. Please also prepare some sweets for both schools.

10.  I have attached some documents. Please check your email. They will give you more ideas on the places we are visiting and the admin details I have informed you earlier.

11. Please familiarise yourself with Anderson SJAB's history. The students might ask you. You can find our history in the blog tab above.

Thank you. Please don’t fall sick or get injured this week. So that you can have a meaningful time there. Remember the things we emphasize for the packing list especially personal medication and no expensive gadgets (PSP, smartphones, iPads) . If there is anything you are not sure, please ask us.
